On June 12, 1941 came 3:16 into Borkel and Schaft a British bomber of the type of Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk V down. The unit of the 51 Squadron was flown by F / Sgt H. Hannay and just had a bombing mission conducted in Duisburg.

Thanks to the efforts of Peter Smits from Borkel Schaft and we now know who were the crew of this unfortunate device. Those were the exception pilot Herbert Hannay (21), 2nd pilot P / O Paul Edward Snyder of the RCAF (25); observer Sgt James Edward Gittins (22); radio operator Sgt Cyril Gerrard Humble (20) and gunner Sgt John Bradshaw (21). They are all five killed in this crash.

Their plane, departed from Dishforth (England), was shot down by a German night fighter, flown by Lt. Reinhold Knacke of I./NJG1. The killed crew members are buried at the cemetery in Woensel.
