Son of William and Mary Rhodes Butterworth Butterworth from Rochdale; Lancashire; Husband of Teresa Butterworth from Rochdale.

On July 21 1944 collapsed two Lancaster bombers almost simultaneously down in Boxtel, after being wounded by German fighters. One (with registration number LM-183) was shot by Heinz-Wolfgang Schnauffer the 4./NJG2 and crashed at 1:40 at the Mijlstraat. The other (LM-185) five minutes later was the victim of Lt. J. Förster of 8./NJG2 and came down with Onrooi. Both Lancasters of 90 Squadron had departed from their base Tuddenham to bomb Homberg. None of the crew members of these two aircraft survived.

Six members of the crew of the LM-183 are buried at the military cemetery in Woensel: pilot F / Lt Philip John Rossington (tomb KK-100); gunner Sgt Spencer Christopher John Butcher (tomb KK-101); gunner Sgt Harry Richard Stuart Hunnisett (tomb KK-102); bombardier F / O Hysert Hugo Borchardt (30) (RCAF) (grave KK-103); radio operator and gunner W / O James William Butterworth (30) and flight engineer Sgt Jeremiah Francis Dineen (20) portions grave KK 104-105. The seventh crew member, navigator F / O Harold Francis Sargent Best (22), Borchardt was a Canadian and is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek, grave XVI. D. 1.

Saturday, July 22, 1944 at 1:40 pm shot down a gear and crashed two kilometers south of Boxtel in a meadow at the Mijlstraat. Ascended of airport Tuddenham destined Homburg to bomb there.

At the Milnrow Memorial stands in the park in Milnrow, Greater Manchester a war memorial bearing the names of many victims of the 1st and 2nd world war. James William Butterworth is listed on the monument. For more information on this memorial click here.
