On the way back from a major attack in Monchengladbach (660 bombers) was on August 31, 1943 at 03:40 an Avro Lancaster I of the 207 Squadron shot down by a night fighter. The aircraft came down at Pan. Only the bombardier Sgt Herbert K. Scott (RCAF) survived the crash. He was subsequently taken prisoner.

The other members of the crew: pilot P / O J. Hickling; navigator Sgt Maurice Atkinson (23); radio operator / gunner Sgt Thomas Barnett (20); Flight Engineer Sgt Eric Alfred Richard Preston (24); gunner Sgt Thomas George Moore (35) and gunner Sgt Harold Allen Queen lost their lives. Harold Queen is a Canadian post-war reburied at the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek, grave XV F 10.
