Son of Walter A. B. and Ada Emily Grace from Leicester.

On June 29, 1943 came in the middle of the night, at 02:14, an Avro Lancaster III bomber of the 619 Squadron of the RAF down in Aalst. The aircraft was flown by F / Sgt Terence Peter Murphy (23). The plane crashed shortly after it was poured down the Elshouters in Waalre a Halifax.

To just before eleven that night was the bomber left from the English base Woodhall Spa, as a participant in a project with 608 aircraft that Cologne had targeted. , Ultimately reaching 540 aircraft their target. In this raid were lost 25 aircraft, which include amongst others Waalre, Boekel, Netersel, Nuenen and Aarle-Rixtel came down.

The Avro Lancaster Murphy was hit by German flak (antiaircraft) and eventually shot down by Lt Günther Radusch II./NJG of Stab 3.

The entire crew was killed: besides Murphy were the navigator F / O Eric Harper (35); bombardier F / O Alexander Mackay (29); radio operator / gunner Sgt Norman Evans Rivers; Flight Engineer Sgt. Jack Adsetts; gunner Sgt Raymond Archibald Grace (23) and gunner F / Sgt John Harvey William Walker (22) (RCAF). As a Canadian, he is burried at the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek.

A British soldier stayed in Holland (after the war) and married a Dutch girl. Her mother was in the town when the aircraft came down; because it was so close to her house after the war she tended the graves of the crew.
The mother of Sgt Grace, Ada Emily Grace from Leicester sent her a photo of Sgt Grace and his medal ribbons in appreciation of dedication in tending to her sons grave.
The lady who tended the graves died in 1997 we believe, at an elderly age and her daughter and my father’s friend cleared out the house and found the items. They still live in Eindhoven.
He did not know what to do with them so handed them to the RAF Eindhoven Association.
