Son of Fred and Kate Whitfield from Middlesbrough; Yorkshire.

On June 25, 1943 was around 1:06 a Halifax II bomber of the 419 Squadron shot down by a German night fighter, flown by Hauptmann Hans-Dieter Frank. The plane crashed at night, in the triangle Lekstraat-Rijnstraat-Boschdijk. Rod Fire Bombs fell from the crashing plane, caused a fire in the Scheldestraat, about 400 meters away, where a boy of eighteen months seriously injured his leg.

The seven-member crew, pilot Sgt R. Whitfield, F / O R.J.L. Fowler, F / O W.A. Donnelly, Sgt. C. Gorton, Sgt. P. Stephenson, Sgt. J.E. Dean and F / S M.P. Kimber did not survive the blow. Donnelly was the only one who was not killed, he died three days later, probably in a hospital. They were first buried all seven in Woensel. After the liberation, the two Canadians among them, Fowler and Kimber, transferred to the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek.
