Entered service on 27/06/1942 , flew his 1st mission as Captain with this crew in Lancaster JB683 to Berlin on 23/24/12 1943, a flight of 8 hours and 27 minutes
On 29/30 december 1943 they flew in a Lancaster JB731 again on Berlin

Operation: Berlin. Take off 18.55 Bourn.
Homebound, crashed at Luijksgestel (Noord-Brabant, Netherlands), 11 km SE of Bladel and practically on the Durch/Belgian border.

P/O Coates had won an immediate DFM, Gazetted 7 Jabuary 1944, for his tenacity during a raid on Berin in the December (1943)
