Son of William John and Catherine Morris from Maltby Yorkshire.
On August 12, 1942 at 3:30 am, a burning bomber rushes past the home of the Van Heugten family in Lierop. The plane crashes a little further into the forest. On September 20, 1986, a memorial was unveiled in memory of the 5 crew members killed.
The bomber, a Wellington Mk III, the BJ603, belonged to the No. 156 Squadron, no. 3 Group.
On the evening of Tuesday, August 11, 1942, 154 British bombers, including 68 Wellingtons, left their base in England for a night-time attack on the German city of Mainz near Frankfurt am Main. The BJ603 departed at 10:39 p.m. (local time) from Alconbury airport.
Mainz was the goal because it was a major junction in the German rail network. In addition, there was also a lot of industry and a rhaven.
The crew of the BJ603 bomber consisted of:
Pilot Officer Taylor, Charles Frederick (32 years old)
Sergeant Murray, Donald Emslie (22 years old)
Sergeant Morris, William Richard (20 years old)
Sergeant Moss, Robert William (23 years old)
Sergeant Pearl, John Alister (22 years old)
On the way back the bomber was intercepted by Feldwebel Spille. Feldwebel Spille belonged to the German night hunter unit 3./NJG 1 (3rd Staffeln, 1st Gruppe, 1st Nachtjagdgeschwader).
The Wellington roared wildly past the Van Heugten family’s house on Vaarsehoefseweg in Lierop. The plane crashed at 03:30 on Wednesday 12 August 1942.
The Germans were quickly on the spot, so it took until the morning before the van Heugten family dared to go and have a look. The bomber crashed and there was nothing left of it. All crew members perished, they were mutilated unrecognizable. Morris, Murray, Pearl and Taylor are buried in a common grave. All the victims are buried here.
